NRSWA Street Works Full – Operative

Units 1 to 7, & 9

Who Should Attend?
The New Roads & Street Works training programme is designed for Operatives who carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement of various materials in the Highway.

This training course provides delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform operative duties to the standards prescribed in-line with the current New Roads and Street Works (NRSWA) Act, in order to safeguard themselves and others.

Training Course Content

  • 001 Location of underground apparatus.
  • 002 Signing, lighting and guarding.
  • 003 Excavation in the highway.
  • 004 Reinstatement of compaction and backfill materials.
  • 005 Reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
  • 006 Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials.
  • 007 Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials.
  • 009 Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.

Operative Qualifications

  • Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Unit 2)
  • Excavation in the highway (Units 1-3).
  • Excavation, backfill & reinstatement of construction layers with a bituminous surface (Units 1-6).
  • Reinstatement of construction layers in hot-lay and cold-lay bituminous materials (Units 1, 2, 6 & 7).
  • Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 1, 2 & 9).

By the end of the training course delegates will be able to:

  • Summarise the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works (NRSW) Act.
  • Select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities.
  • Perform duties of each unit and/or qualification as prescribed in-line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable.
  • Provide a safe working environment for themselves and others.

Training Course Methods
Classroom based theory training with oral and written questions and practical assessments. A training group may contain a mix of both Operatives and Supervisors. Sessions will be varied within the overall framework to allow the most effective development of the candidate.

Additional Information
Delegates should inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course.

Candidates are also required to bring full PPE for practical assessments. This includes hard hat, hi vis vest/jacket, gloves, ear defenders, gloves, and steel toe cap footwear.
